Why I Muck: MuckFest New Jersey Volunteer, Dan Varady
Every day we come one step closer to our goal: a world free of MS. Together will we end MS forever. This is the mission of the National MS Society, and it is an especially important mission during Black History Month because recent studies have shown that MS is far more prevalent amongst African Americans than previously believed. African Americans are more likely to experience relapses and are also more likely to experience greater disability. We muck for them, and for all those with MS. We muck together for a world without MS.
That’s why we are honored to showcase Dan Varady, a MuckFest New Jersey volunteer who lives with MS. He is a long-time member of the MuckFest family, supporting Muckers throughout the course and reveling in all their successes. He is an integral part of that success, and to the National MS Society’s mission.
How did you first hear about MuckFest?
I first heard of MuckFest through the former Walk MS Director, Julie Falgiano, and was urged then by the former President of the New Jersey Metro National MS Society Chapter, Lisa Gallipoli, to volunteer my time to help us have a great event. I have been a volunteer for 8 years and love it!
What do you love most?
Seeing the teams’ “uniforms” before they get muddy and seeing the participants after they run the course.
What have been some of your best MuckFest memories?
Making friends with National MS Society staff, all the participants, and, of course, my fellow volunteers.
What do you want more people to know about MS and this community?
Every MS patient has a different story, but WE ARE ALL WARRIORS!!!!
How can people embody the giving spirit all year?
Give your time and volunteer. Participate in events. Donate to an event, team, participant or to the National MS Society.
What do you love most about the mud?
Not being in it 😉 …and seeing others have a ball in the MUCK!
What are you most excited for in 2020?
Watching everyone get muddy and seeing the amount of donations shatter the previous year’s mark!
We’re so honored to have Dan and all our volunteers in the mud with us!
