Spouses Who Muck Together Make Muddy Memories Together
We always say that nothing brings people together quite like getting muddy! And on Spouse’s Day, that’s truer than ever. We love seeing couples and families getting together to leap and bound into the MuckFest goodness.
Cindy K. was just one of our newest Muckers to bring her partner and family into the mud in 2019! Last year, she Mucked for the first time in Chicago, along with her husband of more than 25 years, Bret, and a whole team of first-time Muckers. As someone recently diagnosed with MS herself, this was a very special and impactful weekend for her family.
Now, months later, she and her family still talk and laugh at those muddy memories, and she loved that MuckFest helped her create such a unique experience for her and Bret, even after more than two decades of unforgettable memories together. Today, for Spouse’s Day, she’s telling us a little about love, mud, and family….
Tell us about your husband, Bret!
Bret and I have been married for 27 years. He is my best friend, and we do everything together! I met him in 1987 on my first day of college at Northern Illinois University. I told my roommate that night that Bret was the man I was going to marry. 😊 We started dating at the end of my freshman year and have been together ever since.
And that included participating in MuckFest together!
2019 was a busy year for us. We were planning and had our daughter Alexandria’s wedding, bought and remodeled our new home…and participated in our first MuckFest!
We first heard about MuckFest in 2018 from Dawn, one of my college roommates, after I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis earlier that year. Unfortunately, the 2018 date in Chicago conflicted with a vacation. So, we set our sights on MuckFest 2019.
Our whole family decided to join in! We signed up with our daughters, Alexandria and Haley, Alexandria’s husband, Kyle, Haley’s boyfriend, Alan, and two of my roommates from NIU, Aileen and Laura. My mother was not physically able to join in, but she still came out to watch and support us.
On the day of MuckFest, my family surprised me with matching team shirts, which was so special.
What were your first impressions as you got ready for MuckFest?
To be honest, I wasn’t sure I could do it. But on every obstacle, Bret and the rest of my family were there to help. When I couldn’t get over something, they pulled and pushed me right through. Bret talked me through every climbing challenge because I’m afraid of heights. Bret and the rest of my group stayed by my side through every obstacle. Even though I was exhausted, I made it through every challenge with the love and support of Bret, my family and friends.
What are your best memories now looking back?
Bret and I had so much fun, whether I was falling into a mud pit or Bret was losing his glasses on the slide…even hearing the emcee of the event making fun of Bret’s cargo shorts before the start of the race. 😊 We laughed through every section of the course for one reason or another, and that made it a great day!
We have talked so much about MuckFest and what a great time we had that we are expecting a much larger group to join us in 2020!
